Universal Character Vault is built on top of SQLite and XML. Specifically, XML data is stored inside a SQLite database, which is in turn stored in your User\ApplicationData\Universal Character Vault folder on Windows, or Library/Application Support/Universal Character Vault folder on a Mac. If you want to take a look under the hood, you can make a copy of the database, then use a database browsing tool such as DB Browser (available for free at http://sqlitebrowser.org ) to take a look without fear of messing up your stuff.
Enjoy!
What's New in Universal Character Vault
Changes for version 1.3.5:
• Added a new search panel that groups entries by Campaign.
• Removed a bit of debugging code that produced a large message box when a group import was overwriting an existing character entry.
• Added a bit of shading to even numbered rows in list boxes in the main chooser window and the images window for readability.
• Added the ability to accept dropped image files or images from other applications onto the canvas area of the Images window. (Updates the list of images associated with the entry or character, and saves them to the database.)
• Added a warning when a user adds really large image files to the Images windows. Saving and retrieving those images can affect performance, but UCV will allow it if the user really wants to.
Changes for version 1.3.4:
• Added drag and drop ability to the Images window. Drop image files, or images straight from other applications.
• Updated the interface for a more modern appearance. Smaller icons, buttons replace the Toolbars, and metallic appearances for the main window as well as the View window (Mac only). The Windows version sees fewer of these visual improvements but still has smaller icons in bevel buttons.
• Added linked menu items to the Help menu to bring up the web site for help and documentation.
Changes for version 1.3.3:
• Fixed a problem where, when importing a group of entries, UCV would not overwrite the existing entry even when the user said it was okay.
Changes for version 1.3.2:
• Fixed stuck Next button (didn't move when windows was resized).
• On Mac, the Cocoa framework now supports correct function of Format -> Bold.
Changes for version 1.3.1:
• Upgraded the Journals window with easier to understand icons and a new Find/Find Next feature.
• Cosmetic improvements continue.
• From the main window, you can use shortcuts to open windows. Press '1' or doubleclick for Entry, '2' for Journals, '3' for Images, and '4' or spacebar for View.
• The Fonts menu has been moved to the Format menu. Fonts are only chosen in journal entries.
• KNOWN ISSUE: Large Journals save and open slowly on UCV for Windows. This has to do with how the development framework (Xojo) handles textarea objects. On the Mac, it will open even the largest journals in a blink, but on Windows there can be some save/load time. Unfortunately, this flaw will remain until Xojo itself is improved.
Changes for version 1.3.0:
• Various cosmetic changes to accommodate new Game Packs for GMs. UCV is "genericized" and the interface slightly improved to make sense when used for characters, GM resources, or even entire adventures.
Changes for version 1.2.2:
• Minor improvements and bug fixes.
Changes for version 1.2.1:
• Disabled an extraneous Commit statement that, when removing Journals, would throw an error. This cropped up as a result of moving to a new database engine under 1.2.
• Added the Duplicate icon back to the toolbar on the main window.
Changes for version 1.2.0:
• Enabled more advanced CSS support for the Windows version of UCV. If the user has IE version 10 or above, newer/better stylesheets (used to display characters) can be used. If it isn't present, then it continues to render in IE 7 compatibility mode.
Changes for version 1.1.1:
• Fixed the crash that happened in Mac OS X 10.9 when opening the Data Entry window.
Changes for version 1.1.0:
• Tweaked the Data Entry Window.
• Changed Bigger and Smaller shortcuts on text in the Journals window to use cmd (or ctrl for Windows) = or -. This is to make it more similar to other editor shortcuts.
• Existing Mac OS issues in Journals: Real Studio's Cocoa features are still in beta. We can't go back to Carbon because that will ruin the character display. So, we ahve to live with it until Real Software fixed that stuff. I've worked around most of the issues save one: if the first character of any journal is bold, the text area will go crazy when you next try to mess with the text style. If formatting gets too screwed up, you can reset all the formatting via the Edit menu.
• Double click a character in the chooser (main) window to go immediately to the Data Entry window.
• Default size of the main (chooser) window is now larger for convenience.
• Modified tab order in the Data Entry window for people who use keyboard shortcuts.
• Updated the About window.
• Added new menu options - Group Export and Group Import. UCV is now capable of exporting and importing mass groups of characters.
Changes for version 1.0.13:
• Rearranged the Data Entry window to make a bit more sense and easier to use.
• Added a New button, split out from Add/Update. This now pulls up a drawer (MacOS) or window (Windows) to make it more clear when the user is creating a new entry.
Changes for version 1.0.12:
• Fixed a crash that could happen if the Add Entry button was clicked in the data entry window for a game system that had no addable entries.
Changes for version 1.0.11:
• Added the ability to, when duplicating an entry, have the underlying character sheet adopt the name and campaign of whatever the user put in the Duplicate window.
• Modified the tab order of the chooser window.
• Fixed an issue where if reference data, located in the game system data xml file, lists web links but no text to associate the link with, the program would crash.
• Added a small bit of statistics to the chooser window. It now shows a total number of entries displayed in the list area when the mouse hovers over it.
• Changed default font from the System font to Arial for date labels and listboxes. This is to fix an issue where, in the Cocoa build for Mac, italicized text didn't appear if the System font didn't have an italics version.
• (Windows only) Added a separator line below the toolbars.
• (Mac only) Dates are now properly italicized in date text fields.
• (Mac only) Italicized entries in list fields are now properly displayed on the Mac.
• Fixed an issue where, if a journal title had a single quote (apostrophe) in it, it might not import properly after being exported.
Changes for version 1.0.10:
• Shortcuts were implements to make journals, images, character entry and character sheet windows available most places rather than only from the main chooser window.
• Many popups are now sorted alphabetically.
Changes for version 1.0.9:
• The Set button in the Journals window is no longer set to default.
• Fixed an issue where the Filter controls would slide as the main window was resized.
• Added a Links popup to the Windows version of UCV. Links provided in the small HTMLViewer of the Enter Data window will now be accessed here to get around an issue where in Windows, when a link is clicked it loads in the small viewer rather than the users web browser. This popup does not appear in the Mac version since links work properly there.
Changes for version 1.0.8:
• Fixed an issue where the What's New window could cause a crash if a temporary folder item could not be created.
Changes for version 1.0.7:
• Added the capability to drag and reorder items in the Enter Data window within data blocks. Data blocks may not be reordered, however, only individual items within each block.
• Fixed an issue where items in Enter Data that had the same label would list the first item in the list and duplicate that entry for each item of the same name.
• Added menu items and corresponding shortcuts as an alternative to clicking icons.
• New menu item. New Character under the File menu blanks all fields in the main window to make it more obvious UCV is ready to receive a new character entry.
• Swapped the location of the Search field and Filter control.
• Character Type information is now preserved in exports and imports of characters.
Changes for version 1.0.6:
• UCV now remembers scroll position so that when the list in the chooser changes, it will retain the user's selection and scroll position.
Changes for version 1.0.5:
• Fixed a problem in the Windows version of UCV where the last line of Journals might not be displayed in character sheets.
Changes for version 1.0.4:
• Fixed the Math button, where it did not move when the Enter Data window was resized.
• Created a new Font popup menu in the Journal window to replace the Fonts menu item.
• Added the capability for version change information to be stored in the version file.
• Added a What's New menu item under Help.
