Background/History: Brogans have always been cops. First in New York, then Chicago, and now, finally, Angelus—City at the end of the world. My city, soon to be my grave, though I won't lie down in it just yet. I may be one dead cop, but I still have a job to do. Like I said, Brogans have always been cops, but they've never been rich cops. I joined the bomb squad for the hazard pay, looking for a chance to get ahead. Everyone at home looked at me like I'd gone crazy, but it wasn't like that at all. I had the nerves and I had the know-how, so why shouldn't I do something with them?

But this is Angelus, and eventually I found out there are things more dangerous than bombs in this city. It happened about a month ago. Cultists had planted a timed device in the subbasement of a high-rise apartment building, and there wasn't time to evacuate the block. This one was too complex to disarm via remotes, so I cleared the area and neutralized it myself. Unfortunately, I wasn't alone under that building—those cultists had summoned... something. I had no idea what it was, but it looked hungry, and I was weighted down by blast armor and the device I was removing. Having no way to escape, and no weapons, I confess I went temporarily insane in the face of that slimy horror, and did the only thing I could think of—I rearmed the bomb in my hands, putting hundreds of people at risk. When the creature lunged at me, I fed the bomb into its hideous maw, and it swallowed the device whole, then tried to take off my arm as well.

Escape was hopeless, with those jaws crushing me, and the creature nearly finished making a meal out of me before the bomb went off inside it. The blast vaporized it, and I should have died too, but I wasn't that lucky. Instead, I regained consciousness in the Angelus General burn ward, with X-SWAT Director Cadbury making me some crazy offer to "take revenge against the things that did this to me." Skip the sales pitch, lady—I was there. I did this to myself, and it's a mess—four useless limbs, face burned beyond recognition, and I've lost my eyesight. Seeing as I deliberately caused the explosion, I think I'm off the bomb squad, so if X-SWAT actually wants a screwed up wreck like me, then I'll sign up.

So the X-SWAT medical technicians replaced all that burned meat with state-of-the-art cybernetics; even my eyes. Now I can see in the dark. And run at 40 kph, leap 36 meters, lift six metric tons, punch through a concrete wall, and straight-arm a heavy maser. Why? Because I killed an Entity, and X-SWAT likes cops who kill Entities. That's what they want me to do, so I'm doing it. I'm not good for much else any more—they still haven't given me a decent face. And after the fiasco with the bomb, I couldn't face my family with the news that I was going from the bomb squad to X-SWAT. And I sure as hell can't face them looking the way I do now. They all think I died in the blast, and my body was never recovered. Officially, I'm already dead. By rights, I should have died, and soon, I probably will. But not without taking a whole shit-load of these slimy bastards along with me.

Personality/Motivation: Brogan's personality is complex interaction of extremes. He's fanatically dedicated to doing his job, and in the short time he's been with them, Brogan has formed an extremely tight bond of loyalty to the members of 9th Squad. He also feels a great debt of gratitude to Director Cadbury. Aside from that, his emotional outlook is almost entirely negative. He hates what he's become—a deformed cyborg—and can't bring himself to face anyone from his previous life in his current condition, which is why they all think he's dead. At the same time, he hates himself for lying to them and leaving them all behind. Most of all, though, he hates entities, for what they've done to him, and what he's gone through. Cadbury signed Brogan onto X-SWAT with the promise of fighting and killing Entities, and as long as he gets to do that, he'll do anything she wants.

In spite of everything, Brogan has kept a sense of humor, albeit a rather grim, sardonic one.

Quote: "Just get me patched up before the world ends, Doc. I promised somebody I'd be there."

Powers/Tactics: Brogan is still figuring out the best ways to fight entities using his cyborg capabilities and X-SWAT equipment, but he's learning very quickly. It's been established that he can take on multiple class II entities, and withstand attacks from class III's. His punch is enough to knock an entity over, while Brogan's all-out charge (move-thru) can put one through a wall. He prefers to rapid-fire a C-90, emptying its entire charge into an entity in a single burst, which is effective but uses lots of extra clips. The 'power rend' attack can actually pull an entity apart, which is to say the least, messy. Brogan's cyborg body has a number of defenses against entity attacks. He doesn't feel much pain, which makes it very difficult for physical attacks to stun him. (Because of his old burn wounds, energy attacks do normal stun damage.) He doesn't bleed from attacks which strike any part of his body replaced by cybernetics. And most of his skin has been replaced by reactive polymers which stiffen under impact.

Brogan has been through the usual training course given to X-SWAT recruits. Prior to that, he served on the Angelus PD Bomb Squad, where he trained in Demolitions, Electronics, Explosives, and Systems Operations. He's also had some basic self-defense training. (martial arts: commando training) A couple of other notable abilities include nightvision, and a preternatural sense for entity activity. Nobody really knows how he does it, but Brogan can sometimes tell when entities are near, or have been recently, and which way they went. This also seems to contribute to his uncanny ability to fight them.

Appearance: Brogan is seldom seen out of uniform, which for him is a full nanofiber bodysuit and armored jacket. He dons clamshell armor and a riot shield whenever possible. His face is mostly old burn wounds which won't regenerate. He covers as much of it as possible with a large pair of dark sunglasses, even when he's indoors. He can't re-grow his hair, either, so he keeps his head covered with a blue "do-rag" even though it's not regulation. Once they see him without it, nobody really cares about the regs any more. He also keeps his hands covered, so as not to advertise the implanted "knuckle-dusters" he uses to smash entities. Brogan's clamshell is decorated with an unorthodox skull-and-crossed sabers graphic. Beneath the jolly roger emblem he's painted the words "War Machine."
